Stagnant, pooling water is a breeding ground for algae, a source of food for mosquito larvae...

... an increase in the mosquito population is expected in the areas affected by Hurricane Isaac. This is due to the fact standing of water providing easy breeding grounds. A higher mosquito population means the potential of more West Nile carrying mosquitoes and an increased risk of humans becoming infected with the disease...
