Small Scale Alcohol Production in Local Communities

I was recently contacted by one David Chu, PE, who is the author of the article, "Liquid Sunshine," about small scale renewable alcohol and organic food production in local communities.

Mr. Chu said, "There are quite a few myths about alcohol fuel or ethanol perpetrated by Big Oil in the lamestream mass media, some of which are addressed in th[e] article."

Definitely worth a read from a survival and self-sufficiency perspective, folks. Check it out.

Root Cellars Are Making a Comeback

Rainy Day Root Cellars announces the release of an engineered, underground storage facility that can be delivered anywhere in the United States.

Rainy Day Root Cellars have been designed to fill a need for practical, safe and secure storage of food and water supplies, important papers, firearms and ammunition, sensitive files, etc.

These cellars are pre-engineered and delivered to your property in a very timely manner, usually within 6 weeks of the deposit being placed, often under four weeks. Once installed, you and your family will have the assurance of a very secure, climate-regulated storage. Food storage is one of the most important safety factors a family can have. Is your basement secure? What happens if a tornado or strong storm tears away the first floor? What happens if fire rages through the area around your house, is your present storage location capable of standing up to fires?

It is estimated that a year supply of food for a family of four will cost around $15,000.00. How much is the storage area worth? Does your basement or garage or attic maintain a constant temperature in winter and summer? Is your garage secure from fire, gas fumes, or thieves? Is your food in your basement? What happens if your water heater floods or your drains back up?

Rainy Day Root Cellars will maintain your storage at the recommended optimum temperature range to get the most of your foods shelf life. They stay cool in the summer and above freezing in the winter. If a two-room model is chosen, one room can be kept warmer or cooler than the other simply by adjusting the air intake vent in either room.

Steel cellar doors are utilized on the outside of the structure. Steel, cast in place doors are used to provide maximum security into the cellar area itself. That means a minimum of two lockable steel doors for added security. The walls, floor and ceiling are reinforced concrete. All the joints are sealed inside and out for waterproofing. Pipe penetrations are sealed inside and out. You will not find a better system anywhere to protect your family’s resources.

What good is all the food storage in the world, if it is not kept safe and secure from the elements or thieves? Rainy Day Root Cellars will ensure that your storage will be there when it’s needed most.

The History and Future of Pandemics

The History and Future of Pandemics | Health Training Guide: "Without a doubt, a pandemic is a serious – and usually deadly – disease outbreak at a global level. In fact, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) states that 'another influenza pandemic is highly likely, if not inevitable'. The word pandemic, itself, comes from the Latin word Pan which means across or all, and the Greek word Demos which refers to a population or people. Thus, pandemic refers to a disease that spreads across to many people in a region, continent or even the world..."

Letter RE: "Post-EMP Boat Escape"

Reader Anthony K. from Bellingham, WA recently emailed with an interesting question: "Our bug out location is in the San Juan Islands and the ferries will obviously be down with an emp or dangerous social conditions. We have a rubber raft with oars but will need to travel 30 or more miles over open water possibly in inclement weather. Are outboard engines operable after emp or are there alternatives? I would appreciate your input."

As someone with no boating experience, I wasn't sure if an outboard engine would suffer the same effects as a car engine during an EMP. I did a little digging, though, and I believe any small outboard engines, lawnmower engines (2 or 4-stroke) would be okay. The reason being, simplified, is that EMP only fries integrated circuits and fuses. Older engines aren't computer driven, so I think they would still run.

Many Of You Will Not Believe Some Of The Things Americans Are Doing Just To Survive

Many Of You Will Not Believe Some Of The Things Americans Are Doing Just To Survive: "You might not want to read this article if you have a weak stomach. Most Americans have absolutely no idea what is going on in the dark corners of America, and when people find out the truth it can come as quite a shock. Many of you will not believe some of the things Americans are doing just to survive. Some families are living in sewers and drain tunnels, some families are living in tents, some families are living in their cars, some families will make ketchup soup for dinner tonight and some families are even eating rats. Some homeless shelters in America are so overloaded that they are actually sending people out to live in the woods. As you read this, there are close to 50 million Americans that are living below the poverty line, and that number rises a little bit more every single day. America was once known as the greatest nation on earth, but now there is decay and economic despair almost everywhere you look. Yes, money certainly cannot buy happiness, but the lack of it sure can bring a lot of pain. As the economy continues to decline, the suffering that we see all around us is going to get a lot worse, and that is a very frightening thing to think about..."

20 Things We Can Learn About The Future Of America From The Death Of Detroit

20 Things We Can Learn About The Future Of America From The Death Of Detroit: "Do you want to know what the future of America is going to look like? Just check out what is happening to Detroit. The city of Detroit was once one of the greatest industrial cities in the history of the world, but today it is a rotting, decaying, post-apocalyptic hellhole. Nearly half the men are unemployed, nearly half the population is functionally illiterate, more than half of the children are living in poverty and the city government is drowning in debt. As economic conditions have gotten worse, crime has absolutely exploded. Every single night in Detroit there are frightening confrontations between desperate criminals and exasperated homeowners. Unfortunately, the police force in Detroit has been dramatically reduced in size. When the police in Detroit are called, they often show up very late if they even show up at all. Detroit has become a lawless hellhole where violence is the currency of the streets. If you want to survive in Detroit, you better be ready to fight because there are hordes of desperate criminals that are quite eager to take literally everything that you have got. But don't look down on Detroit too much, because what is happening in Detroit will soon be happening all over America..."

Preschooler’s Homemade Lunch Replaced with Cafeteria “Nuggets”

Sadly, the bell seems truly to be tolling for freedom in this once great nation.

Preschooler’s Homemade Lunch Replaced with Cafeteria “Nuggets” - Mr. Conservative: "A preschooler at West Hoke Elementary School ate three chicken nuggets for lunch Jan. 30 because a state employee told her the lunch her mother packed was not nutritious.

The girl’s turkey and cheese sandwich, banana, potato chips, and apple juice did not meet U.S. Department of Agriculture guidelines, according to the interpretation of the agent who was inspecting all lunch boxes in her More at Four classroom that day..."

Gay Marriage

Recently, Washington state lawmakers passed a bill, setting the stage for that state to become the seventh in the nation to allow same-sex couples to get married. I typically make it a point to stay out of debates with religious undertones. I admit this is partially because it makes for such a polarizing situation and many in the Survivalist/Prepper subculture are very religious people. It's not exactly considered wise for a blogger to risk alienating his readership, but I feel the need to clarify my position on this issue.

Let's be crystal clear on something: I don't give a crap about gay marriage... or straight marriage, for that matter. And neither should you, because unless you're in it, it isn't your business. In fact, I don't believe the government ought to be involved in marriage at all.

Marriage should be a religious institution only; straight or gay, if you can find a church willing to marry you, have at it. Then, in my world, you would file for a completely separate domestic partnership to change your legal status with the government, should you so choose. Conversely, if I wanna move in with my brother and file a domestic partnership, I should be perfectly within my rights to do so. It isn't the government's business who I choose as a life partner.

Now, I know this is gonna rub some folks the wrong way because of some stuff in the Bible that says being gay is wrong. But, if you're a Christian and you believe that then you're reading from the wrong book; you're supposed to be living under "The Grace," not "The Law" and I don't recall Jesus having much to say on the subject. So, unless you're an Orthodox Jew, the religious argument holds no water -- you either need to re-examine your beliefs or just go ahead and wrap your head around the fact that you're really just a bigot. Luckily, we live in a country where folks have died to afford you the freedom to be a bigot, but let's not be hypocritical and try to blame it on God.

And, even if you do consider it to be immoral, I would argue that it is not the government's role to legislate morality; if you disagree, then you're far too comfortable having "The Man's" nose in your business than I will ever be.

People are free to believe any absurd mess they want to believe, but the government should have no dog in the fight. Every hour they spend debating and drawing-up Bills and briefs and Lord knows what else and every bit of ink and paper they use is being paid-for (including their salaries and the salaries of their staffs) with taxpayer dollars to deal with an issue that the government shouldn't even be involved in. There are real problems in this world going unsolved because public servants can't stop obsessing over whether it's okay for Joe Bob and Pete to tie the knot. Who cares! And I'm a Conservative, saying this.

Further, the country I was raised in believes in equal protections and equal rights *FOR ALL AMERICANS EVERYWHERE* -- no exceptions. I see this as being no different than when bigoted individuals tried to curtail the rights of blacks and women before that. People have the right to be close-minded bigots; they *DO NOT* have the right to turn their prejudices into law. That's why I nearly flip my lid whenever people talk about trying to pass a Constitutional Amendment defining marriage as between one man and one woman -- that mess doesn't belong anywhere near the Constitution.

That document isn't supposed to tell us what rights we have; we have our rights from the moment we first come into existence. The purpose of the Constitution was to place limits on what the government is allowed to do in relation to those rights. We are all sovereign entities with the right to live however and to do whatever we want as long as we don't stray into activities that impede the rights of anyone else.

I fully expect to lose some readers after this. I hope I'm wrong, but so be it. I'm concerned with individual liberty as the Founders intended, not political games that are ultimately only thrown-out to distract and divide us in the first place.

According To The FBI, Internet Privacy Is Now Considered To Be Suspicious Activity

According To The FBI, Internet Privacy Is Now Considered To Be Suspicious Activity: "When you use the Internet in a public place, do you prefer to have as much privacy as possible? Well, that makes you a potential terrorist. According to the FBI, Internet privacy is now considered to be suspicious activity. If you are out in public and you attempt to keep snoopers from peeking at your computer screen, then according to the FBI they should gather as much information about you as they can and they should report you to the authorities immediately. If this seems completely and totally ridiculous to you, then you are not alone. Millions of Americans have become deeply concerned about the constantly expanding definition of 'suspicious activity' in the United States. Sadly, the federal government is now engaging in an all-out attempt to have us all spy on one another..."

19 Crazy Things That School Children Are Being Arrested For In America

19 Crazy Things That School Children Are Being Arrested For In America: "With each passing year, the difference between America's prisons and America's public schools becomes smaller and smaller. As you read the rest of this article, you will be absolutely amazed at some of the crazy things that school children in America are being arrested for. When I was growing up, I don't remember a single police officer ever coming to my school. Discipline was always handled by the teachers and by the principals. But today, there are schools all over the country that have police officers permanently stationed in the halls. Many other schools will call out police officers at the drop of a hat. In the classrooms of America today, if you burp in class, if you spray yourself with perfume or if you doodle on your desk, there is a chance that you will be arrested by the police and hauled out of your school in handcuffs..."
